Photography Pro Tips: What to Wear and Bring to Your Photoshoot

What to Wear and Bring to Your Photoshoot?

We all know that how you dress is how you express yourself. What you wear is an artistic symbol of who you are and what makes you feel your best. The same is true for what you wear to a photoshoot, and I am all about people expressing themselves in front of the camera!

However, a few simple professional techniques will help you look your absolute best on the big day. Did you know that your clothing should stick to a certain color palette and specific patterns depending on the location? For example, try to avoid wearing green when the location is somewhere in nature! This is so that you don’t go all camouflage mode and blend in with the trees and surrounding area. It’s little things like this that have a huge impact on how the photos come to life.

So today, we’re going to go all in on what to wear and bring/what I recommend avoiding depending on where we’re going for our shoot. Take a look below:

What to Wear?

  • Neutrals are always a classic! Colors like black, white, browns, tans, and greys are a pretty safe bet, no matter where you’re posing.
  • Red is a stunning way to pop out in photos. Whether you’re wearing a cherry red shirt or shoes, it’s a great color no matter where we’re taking pics, and it’s super flattering.

Nature Tips

  • Dark colors look great against a natural backdrop, like dark greys and browns.
  • Black and white is also a certified safe combination.
  • Comfortable shoes are a must! Please do not attempt to scale rocks and creeks while wearing heels; it’s so not worth it! Feel free to pack a pair in your bag to change into once we find the perfect place.

City Tips

  • Posing in the city is a great place to play with colors! Pops of colors like tomato red, sunshine yellow, and/or bubblegum pink are a great way to infuse yourself into the photos.
  • Are you a graduating senior? Then bring your cap and gown along! I don’t consider this an extra outfit change!*

Pro Tip: Comfort is key - wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident!

What to Avoid?

  • Patterns or logos - anything busy in your outfit is going to take all the attention away from your stunning face.
  • Greens in nature are not recommended unless you rather like the camouflage vibe. But if not, try to avoid shades of green whilst in nature!

What to Bring?

Props are a great way to incorporate more of your personality into your photoshoot. Whatever the item may be, it can be a perfect addition to your photoshoot, allowing you to add that little extra oomph. For couples over age 21, I’ll bring a complimentary bottle of bubbly to celebrate you if you’d like (please mention this to me during our consultation)! If you’d like me to bring anything else, please let me know in advance, and I’ll see what I can do. Now, let’s chat a little bit about possible items to bring to your shoot.
